Internet speed can confuse users. If we had started our post by directly measuring the internet speed, you would have thought yourself that your speed is wrong. But that is not the case. Once you understand how speed is measured, you’ll stop cursing your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for lying.
One would think that there is no difference between the two. But this is wrong. It’s a big difference. The lowercase letter b in Mbps stands for bits, while the uppercase letter B in MBps stands for bytes. The rest of the letters are the same as M = mega, p = per and s = seconds.
In technical terms, a bit is the smallest unit of data or storage. So, 8 bits become 1 byte. Alternatively, you can say that 1 byte has 8 bits. This means that 1MB = 8Mb. Therefore, your actual internet speed will be lower than that specified by your provider.

So if your ISP says you have an internet speed of 20 Mbps, you need to divide by 8 to get the actual speed in MB. That is, 20MBps ÷ 8 = 2.5MBps.
