CONROE-MONGOLDWYN COUNTY, Texas – The fall equinox is still about a month away on the calendar, but it’s not too early to start planning your Texas fall foliage trip using the 2021 fall foliage forecast map.

The week of November 9th looks good for fall foliage viewing in North Texas, while the week of November 16th should be prime time for Central Texas. Houston and the rest of Southeast Texas will likely peak for these fall colors in mid to late November. Montgomeryshire should see its peak on November 23rd.
No forecasting tool is 100 percent accurate, but using the interactive map released Tuesday gives you a good picture of fall foliage in its bright reds, vibrant oranges and sunny yellows.
Eisenhower State Park, located on the south shore of Lake Texoma in Denison, has an abundance of oak, sumac and elm trees, whose fall colors are striking against the beautiful lake scenery.
The Lost Maples State Natural Area, along the Sabinal River near Vanderpool, is home to oak and sumac, as well as—you guessed it—maple trees, as well as 10 miles of trails to enjoy the colors.

David Angotti, a statistician who lives in Tennessee, was in the field of property management a decade ago when he created the first fall foliage forecast map to help visitors plan their Great Smoky Mountains vacations when the fall foliage is at its brightest.
But then they wanted to learn more about the weather when the leaves appear in other parts of Tennessee, so they decided to collect data from the entire state.
To use the map, slide the scale to the right to see when the leaves are at their peak in your state Plug in your county and you’ll be able to decide if it’s better to plan a route north, south, east or west.
Texas’ Fall Foliage On Display Throughout State
The tool has developed into an essential plan for a fall break. Last year alone, it had more than 5 million hits on SmokyMountains.com and nearly 30 million hits, including on news sites.
Most people use foliage maps just to plan when foliage will peak near their home or scenery.
“However, over the years we have heard some interesting stories about how the tool has been used,” Angotti said in a press release. “Some of our favorites include a bride from the North East of England changing the date of her outdoor wedding, a director organizing a shoot on location based on our predictions and even a primary school teacher planning a trip to a nearby forest.”
Overall, the prolonged drought across much of the United States is likely to result in later-than-normal leaves this year, Angotti said. In affected states, leaves can turn green to brown and skip the bright color wheel before “giving up” and falling to the ground, Angotti said.

Relatively short days, long nights and falling temperatures signal to plants that it is time to prepare for winter. The predictive map uses a complex algorithm that analyzes millions of data points and analyzes approximately 50,000 predictive pieces of information.
It provides an area-by-area forecast of the exact day when the peak occurs. This year, the formula will receive a mid-term update at the end of September which will pull in the latest data to increase the accuracy and usability of the tool.
The main factors that determine peak fall foliage are sunlight, rainfall, soil moisture and temperature. These come from a variety of sources, including historical precipitation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration precipitation forecasts, elevation, actual temperature, forecast temperature, and average daylight exposure to determine each county’s base fall date.
You probably remember from science class that all color changes begin with photosynthesis. Leaves continuously secrete chlorophyll – from spring to early fall – a key element in plants’ ability to convert sunlight into glucose. These cells saturate the leaves, making them green to the human eye.

But the leaves are not green at all. Fall is the time of great leaf revelation: their true colours, are revealed as chlorophyll production ceases. According to the national park website, other compounds influence the colors of the stunning tapestry.

Anthocyanin production, which gives leaves their vibrant red color, increases in the fall, preserving and extending the life of leaves on the plant throughout the fall.
They are produced by flavonols, which are part of the flavonoid protein family. It is always present in leaves, but does not appear until chlorophyll production slows down. October brings some coolness and relief from the summer heat to Texas. This month marks the start of the fall foliage season, which usually lasts from mid-October to early November. As the weather is still warm, it is possible to rent a kayak and admire the trees from the lake. The park has colorful maple, gum and oak trees. Also, stop by Los Pinos Ranch vineyards which are stunning from early to mid November. If you prefer to spend the day in a spectacular autumn forest, exploring its quiet corners, visit Tyler State Park. With an abundance of maples, sweet gums, dogwoods and oaks, the park offers a colorful palette of yellow, red and orange leaves. This tranquil site includes a 64-acre (25 ha) spring-fed lake. Tyler State Park offers boating, fishing, mountain biking and bird watching. Camp overnight and hike the Lakeshore Trail or Whispering Pines Trail for the most scenic views.
